Microsoft releases dotnetup: one tool to install .NET on any platform
Microsoft has opened the public preview of dotnetup, a rustup equivalent for .NET. It is a command-line tool that installs SDKs, runtimes and platform tooling with a single command on Windows, macOS and Linux, into the user's own directory and without administrator rights. Different .NET versions stay isolated, so you can keep the current release and the next LTS on the same machine and tie them to specific projects. CI/CD is a key target: the tool runs without a terminal, disables onboarding in pipelines and plugs into GitHub Actions. InfoWorld's Simon Bisson tried dotnetup on three operating systems and found the installs went smoothly, though the default SDK sets differed and ASP.NET could not be installed on the Mac. Aspire, WebAssembly and VS Code integration are not supported yet, but even in its current form dotnetup addresses a long-standing pain point for .NET developers.
